Education
LGBTQ youth often have more problems with self-esteem, substance use, mental health issues, homelessness and trouble in school than other people because of the homophobia they face every day.
Our mission is to make our communities a better place for LGBTQ youth. Our knowledgeable, passionate staff offer training to health and human service providers, youth workers, educators, administrators, and anyone else who works with LGBTQ youth. We also work with schools to help educate students on LGBTQ issues. If your school is having trouble with bullying (and what school isn’t?), consider having us help out. Peer Youth Educators are usually available to co-train, and all services are always free.
We would be happy to work with you on any topic you need, but here are some workshops and trainings we have offered in the past:
- LGBTQ basics: What do all of those letters mean? Why would someone call themselves queer? What does transgender mean? Can a person choose to be gay? All these questions answered, and more! An introduction to what it means to be Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual,Transgender, Queer or Questioning.
- HIV 101 Youth Education: Our Peer Youth Educators and STAP Staff present 1-2 hour trainings on the basics of HIV and AIDS. Condom demonstrations and free safer sex supplies optional (but free!)
- Gender Identity: The basics on boys, girls, and everyone in between! We talk about transgender, transexual, cross-dressing, drag preforming, and other gender non-conforming identities and activities (we recommend that this that this training follow LGBTQ 101).
- Safe Zone Training: We will train your staff on how to be a supportive ally to clients, colleagues, friends, and community members who identify as LGBTQ.
We also offer support in reviewing agency policies, forms, and practices and helping to create a more inclusive practice.
All workshops are tailored to your school/agency climate, size, needs, program space, and technological options.
